Hypnosis is a word that can conjure up many concepts – most of them inaccurate. Hypnosis, from a technical perspective, is nothing more than the bypassing of our faculty of critical consciousness.

Contrary to popular opinion, hypnosis is NOT a state of unconsciousness, but rather one of heightened consciousness, one in which much greater focus is achievable than usual, but also one in which our critical mind does not challenge every thought that enters our awareness.

That means you have nothing whatever to worry about – you’ll hear everything the hypnotherapist says and be completely aware – even more aware than usual, of what’s going on around you, and that means you are in complete control at all times.That’s correct, in hypnosis, you do not lose control. In fact, it is vitally important to understand that

all hypnosis is self-hypnosis


That’s right. When you enjoy hypnosis, you are always in control. In other words, the hypnotist is NOT in control, YOU ARE. The hypnotist is merely your assistant with the knowledge of how to help you to guide yourself into the hypnotic state.

That means you can relax in the knowledge that hypnosis is completely safe because you always remain in control of the process, and you are the one who decides at any time whether or not you want to continue to a deeper level of hypnosis, or come out of the hypnotic state and chat, or whatever.

The fact is everyone experiences hypnotic state several times each day. WE all go through such a state when falling asleep and when waking. We experience a trance state when we drive long distances and lose track of the kilometers as we drive. And we are often in a trace state as we get fully engaged in our favourite book, or game, or TV programme.

So getting into an hypnotic state is not such a big deal. It’s what happens when your are in trance that’s really important.

And this is why much of hypnotherapy does require the assistance of an appropriate qualified and experienced hypnotherapist. One example is regression hypnosis to deal with emotional issues from earlier in life.

If you choose to engage a professional to assist with this type of intervention, you are advised to be sure he or she has appropriate qualifications and experience which are recognised by (in Australia, for example) professional institutions such as the Australian Hypnotherapists Association or the Australian Society of Clinical Hypnotherapists.

Being sure your practitioner is holds professional or clinical membership of these organisations is your assurance you’re dealing with a professional with appropriate training and who meets stringent requirements for ongoing professional development. And that’s very important, is it not?

Hypnosis is a natural state we all experience every day. I reiterate that each of us goes through a state of hypnosis called ‘hypnogogia’ as we move from wakefulness to sleep at the end of each day, and another called ‘hypnopompia’ as we move from sleep to wakefulness each morning.

The driving experience I mentioned earlier is often referred to as ‘highway hypnosis’ when our conscious mind drifts to various thoughts as our subconscious mind takes care of the driving and the kilometres slip by quicker than we realise. One of the nicest ways to experience light hypnosis is simply to take some time to emerge ourselves in nature.

In summary, hypnosis is a wonderfully relaxing and rejuvenating naturally occurring state we can all learn to harness in order to improve our personal lives and careers.
